Ibn means "son of" and is pronounced "ib-in", exactly how you thought. It's like "O'Brien" being the son of Brian, or "Jameson" being the son of James. The author probably doesn't speak Arabic fluently, and is probably taking artistic liberty and using the word slightly wrong.

Well, ibn Ishaq's book has long since been lost and survives only in fragments. It was absorbed into Ibn Hisham's book which is what you'd find in a bookstore. Al-Tabari's book is easily available.
